Two pet rottweiler dogs were tied to a tree and shot after they escaped from a garden. One of them, a three-year-old female called Belle, died in what the RSPCA have described as a ‘brutal and mindless attack’. The second, a-two-year-old male called Saxon, survived but will require months of intensive treatment. Both animals went missing from their home in High Legh, near Lymm, Cheshire, earlier in the month. Belle was discovered dead next day in a remote wooded area by a golf course. Despite a frantic search by the owner, severely injured Saxon was only discovered by a horse rider in a field three days after he went missing. Vets operated on the pet to remove shot but X-rays show 40 pellets remain inside a neck injury. RSPCA officers believe the animals had been tied to the tree and blasted from close range. The owner, a mother-of-three who declined to be named, told the M.E.N: “They wouldn’t be a threat to anybody. I have no idea why somebody would do this. This wasn’t an air rifle, it was a proper firearm. “It’s amazing Saxon is still with us. He’s got a massive hole in his shoulder. Hopefully they will be able to stitch it up in the next few weeks. It will be a long slow process before he is healed.” RSPCA inspector Anthony Joynes said: “It just seems so callous and spiteful. The animals must have been purposefully tied to a tree and shot at really close range. “The family are absolutely distraught about what has happened. It’s going to take months of treatment before Saxon is fit and healthy again – but I suppose you could say he was lucky to survive. “If anyone knows anything at all we would urge them to come forward as soon as possible and call us on 0300 1234 999.”
